SSAS found to be almost useless

SINGAPORE 10 December – Concerns have been raised as to whether Ship Security Alert Systems (SSAS) can help to prevent acts of terrorism. The issue arose during a seminar held at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore last Friday. Former Bimco International Affairs Liaison officer Thomas Timlen, now a Visiting Research Fellow with the school’s Maritime Security Program, pointed out that acts of terrorism leave precious little time for mobilising response forces.
